Island Shorts

It's official! My short play The Trade, which premiered last summer at Gallery Players, will be performed in Florida next month as a part of City Theatre's Island Shorts on Key Biscayne.

Previously, The Trade was a finalist for City Theatre's National Award for Short Playwriting. Though it did not win that award, City Theatre did present the play in Ft. Lauderdale as a staged reading last August.

Now they will be fully staging the piece on Key Biscayne along with a number of other 10-minute plays. Performances will take place February 5th through 7th. Gail Garrisan is set to direct.

Tickets are available in advance at $20 for Key Biscayne residents and $25 for non-residents. Tickets after February 5th are $30. For more information, check out the City Theatre website.

Dennis Gleason directed a lovely production of the show last year in Brooklyn with Ashley Harris and Ben Sargent. I'm afraid I won't be getting down to Florida for this one, but I hope the production is every bit as good!

Three Solos

Yesterday, I went to see a triple-header of one-person shows as the 19th Annual New York International Fringe Festival began to come to a close.

Not all solo shows can be as good as Howard L. Craft's Freight, but these three plays were all performed both with humor and an emotional core. While some were more successful than others, they were all worth seeing.

Last week, when I went to see the Fringe production of Fuente Ovejuna, I overheard an audience member talk up a show he had recently seen. "It's called The Absolutely True Science of Nerds," he said. "You've got to see it! This dude gives all the science behind Batman, Star Wars, Star Trek, and Godzilla. It's great!"

Though this show wasn't one I originally planned on seeing, my friends Holly and Laurie had convinced me to go, so by the time I heard the word on the street (and it might have literally have been on the street) I had already arranged for tickets. Written and performed by Shyaporn Theerakulstit, The Absolutely True Science of Nerds was probably the best thing I saw at the Fringe this year.

Technically,  this was a two-person show, since in between Mr. Theerakulstit's "completely scientific lectures" there are two dance breaks. In the first one, the playwright and actor proves he is also a mean tap dancer. The second dance break is performed by one of several burlesque artists. I saw Tiger Bay perform a strip tease as Carl Sagan. It was wrong. So very wrong. And I loved it.

Later that afternoon, I saw Mark DeMayo's The Broccoli Murder, DiCaprio Dance and Other Stories From My 20 Years as a NYC Cop. The show was precisely what it sounds like, but very funny. I particularly enjoyed DeMayo's account of a man who robbed the laundromat downstairs from where he lived, and just around the corner from the police precinct. Not the brightest guy in the world.

Then in the evening, I was happy to run into Dennis Gleason, who directed my short play The Trade at Gallery Players this summer. Dennis was the venue manager for the space where Venus and Adonis was playing. This one-woman show by Misha Bouvion took its text from the (sort of) famous poem by Shakespeare, with a few pronoun changes so Bouvion could perform the whole piece in the person of Venus. Her voluptuous body and melodious voice added a great deal to the poem, even though there isn't much dramatic action in Shakespeare's text.

If you missed these performances, don't fear! I have a feeling all three of them will be back at some point in the future.

The Trade in Miami

My ten-minute play The Trade will be presented this upcoming Monday, August 10th in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

Miami's City Theatre will be giving staged readings of several short plays, including The Trade, at 7:00 on Monday at Ft. Lauderdale's Empire Stage, 1140 N. Flagler Drive. Alas, I will not be able to get down there for the piece, but if you're in the area, please go!

The Trade premiered this past June at Gallery Players in Brooklyn as a part of the theatre's Black Box New Play Festival. The piece starred Ashley Harris and Ben Sargent. Dennis Gleason directed.

The play was also a finalist for the City Theatre National Award for Short Playwriting.

One-Act at Gallery Players

Next month, Gallery Players in Brooklyn will be performing my short play The Trade as part of their Black Box New Play Festival!

This past weekend, I met the actors, who are fantastic. Dennis Gleason is directing. If you've never been out to Gallery Players, you should go. They have a lovely, intimate space, and they do good work.

The performances of The Trade will run from Thursday, June 4 to Sunday, June 7. Performances are at 8pm Thursday through Saturday and at 3pm on Sunday. You can find out more about the Black Box New Play Festival here:

Gallery Players

In addition to The Trade, this year's festival includes plays by Bara Swain, Lily Rusek, Natalie Bates, and Stephanie Keys. I won't be able to see all of them, as I'll be up in Massachusetts most of June for rehearsals of Moby-Dick at Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater. However, I will be coming back down to catch the performances of The Trade, so if you come, stop by and say hello!
